Description
This photo of San Francisco's Sutro Baths and Cliff House at dusk highlights a quiet time of day with subdued peach skies and lavender and mauve colored water and ocean.
History:
Sutro Baths was a project developed by Adolph Sutro to "provide a healthy, recreational and inexpensive swimming facility for thousands of San Franciscans. A classic Greek portal opened to a massive glass enclosure containing seven swimming pools at various temperatures. There were slides, trapezes, springboards and a high dive. The power of the Pacific Ocean during high tide could fill the 1.7 million gallons of water required for all the pools in just one hour. The Baths could accommodate 10,000 people at one time and offered 20,000 bathing suits and 40,000 towels for rent." After the Depression years, it fell into disuse and disrepair and the structure burned down in 1966.

The Cliff House has had many reincarnations:
The Original Cliff House (1863-1894)
Victorian Cliff House (1896-1907)
Neoclassical Cliff House (1909 to the present, but extensively remodelled)
In 1937, George and Leo Whitney purchased the Cliff House, to complement their Playland-at-the-Beach attraction nearby, and extensively remodelled it into an American roadhouse.
The most recent incarnation - In 2003, there was an extensive renovation of the Cliff House. Many of (George and Leo) Whitney's additions were removed and the building was restored to its 1909 appearance. A new two-story wing was constructed overlooking the ruins of the Sutro Baths.
