Historic Barbary Coast Trail Plaque is a digitally painted photograph of a plaque similar to others found embedded in various San Francisco streets or sidewalks.
The name Barbary Coast was given to certain areas of San Francisco by sailors visiting the area in about the 1860’s, not long after the 1849 California Gold Rush days.
It was named after a dangerous part of the North African coastline that was home to pirates and slave traders. In San Francisco it applied to districts that were prone to dicey activities, entertainments, crime, and prostitution, these areas being frequented by the thousands who poured into San Francisco seeking their fortunes after the Gold Rush.
This plaque memorializes the Barbary Coast Trail and was found along the Embarcadero near Pier 39. The text reads: Barbary Coast Trail, This Plaque Sponsored by Sign Display Local Union #510 Est. 1900. The plaque art features a gold miner and local sights.
