Little City Sign North Beach is a photograph of this long-standing San Francisco business. Not many of these traditional butcher shops survive today. The photo shows its neon signage by day with the Transamerica pyramid in the background, a contrast of old and new San Francisco.
Little City Market has been around in North Beach San Francisco at 1400 Stockton Street (a block from Columbus Ave.) since at least 1962, according to a San Francisco Genealogy page at:
http://www.sfgenealogy.com/san_francisco_directory/1962/1962_258.pdf. This page lists the retail meat dealers (butcher shops) at that time.
An SF Gate article on the butcher shop is also of interest:
The Sausage Makers at Little City Market in S.F.
By Mike Kepka Published 4:00 am, Sunday, July 24, 2011
A recent Wednesday at 1 p.m.:
After mixing copious amounts of pork through a concrete-mixer-size grinder tucked between the counter and meat locker, Mike and Ron Spinali go to work making today's batch of sausages. There are a few chuckles between them and quick glances at the door for newly arriving customers, but not much is said. Mike guides casings over the sausage mix as it oozes out of a small tube at the bottom of the extruder. Ron quickly pinches and ties the links with an overhand knot that his father taught him more than 60 years ago. They've been doing this together at the Little City Market at Stockton and Vallejo for 30 years, ever since Mike showed up for summer work at the age of 15. Now the two men have designed their lives around each other. They live next to each other. They drive in together. All day long they discuss the finer points of their respective hobbies - wood carving and bike riding are usually high on the list. They go home together. "This is my dad and I get a chance to work with him every day. Even in my teens I don't think Dad got on my nerves much. This is our routine," Mike said.
Another note on this page says that Ron's son, Mike Spinali, 44, first started working at the Little City Market as a summer job at the age of 15.
