Description
Remnant of the Sea is a photograph captured at Ocean Beach in San Francisco in January. It shows the bones of a deceased whale in the foreground emerging from the wet sand. The now defunct Cliff House is in the background. - One of the beach goers that day told me that he was present when this whale had been buried in the sand as it was too large to be taken elsewhere. Apparently the heavy rains in San Francisco this year and rough waves and tides had caused these bones to become exposed once again.
During the drought years here many whales had washed up ashore. Autopsies on many showed they died of ship strikes. My theory (not necessarily scientific) has been that warming sea temperatures caused a scarcity of food sources that weakened many whales and causing them to be more prone to such ship strikes.
