Saints Peter and Paul Church is a photo painting from a photograph taken in late afternoon, while I viewed the church from Washington Square Park in the North Beach neighborhood of San Francisco.
Saints Peter and Paul is a Roman Catholic church designed by architect Charles Fantoni in a Romanesque Gothic style. The present church at 666 Filbert St. across from Washington Square Park in North Beach was built between 1913 and 1924. It replaced the original church (built in 1884) located at Filbert St. and Grant Ave. which was destroyed in the 1906 earthquake and fire, and a smaller church built at that site.
The parish is administered by the Salesians of St. John Bosco, a fraternal religious community. The ministry of the Salesians involves collaboration with other religious organizations in regards to many local and Bay Area clubs, programs and activities including operation of an elementary school.
In 2011 the current church underwent an extensive Tower and Masonry reinforcement project to bring it up to current earthquake safety standards.
This cathedral with its 191 foot twin spires and lovely architecture has been an inspiration to many and a landmark of the North Beach community since it was built.
