Description
Shimmering Sardines and Anchovies is a photograph captured at the Monterey Bay Aquarium in California. It provides a glimpse into the beautiful and mysterious underwater world of a kelp forest. Schools of these silver colored fish dart in and out of the sunlight, where they shine and reflect the suns rays.
A necessary source of food for many marine animals, their populations are now in decline. As of 2018 scientists had estimated the West Coast population of Pacific sardines has declined by 95 percent since 2006.
Anchovies and Sardines are difficult for most people (including me) to differentiate. My searches found this information: "Sardines have distinctive black spots, for one thing. Sardine schools also tend to move in darting motions, while anchovy schools form a vertical funnel or "swirl." Anchovies tend to swim with their mouths wide open, gathering food.
Anchovies frequently seem to be "yawning"—that how you know it's mealtime. They’re opening wide, straining tiny plant and animal plankton from the water. "
