The Old Steam Engine is a digital photo painting of an old steamer fire engine, manned by firefighters in vintage clothing, chatting it up with two lady friends dressed in Victorian hats and clothing. The underlying photo was captured at a Fisherman's Wharf event celebrating 19th century firefighting.

Steam-powered fire pumpers were kept ready for action. The water in the boiler was kept hot even when the engine was in the station. On the way to a fire, a flash fire would be lit in the fire box to bring the already-hot water to a boil and to ignite the long-burning coal. Steam from the boiler powered a two-cylinder steam engine which, in turn, powered the pumps. At the fire, the pumps drew water from a hydrant or sometimes a well, and forced it under pressure through the hoses. The shiny pulsation dome regulated the water pressure in the hoses. The gauges measured the steam pressure in the boiler.

Born and raised in North Dakota, she obtained a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at Minnesota State University in Mankato, MN. Her art education began when her parents enrolled Bonnie in the Art Instruction Schools as a child. This was a home study "Draw Me" school that advertised frequently in the magazines of the time. She continued her interest in art during her college years, majoring in fine art, photography and printmaking. Not long after completing her college BFA degree, Bonnie moved to San Francisco, and continued her art education by taking photography...
