Artist's Description
This photo painting shows the ship Balclutha at San Francisco's Maritime Park, and I added a black border to jazz it up. It looks really great as a framed print.
Balclutha is a three masted, steel-hulled, square rigged ship and was built in 1886 in Glasgow, Scotland to carry a variety of cargo. She has been around Cape Horn, at the tip of South America, seventeen times. She has traveled not only from the UK to the U.S. but also to New Zealand and Australia as well as Alaska. The ship carried a crew of 26 officers and men and it took this many to handle the complex rigging on board the vessel. It ran aground off Alaska and sustained damage in the early twentieth century but it was repaired and placed back in service. The vessel is in very good condition and is located in the Maritime National Park at the Hyde Street Pier in the Fisherman's Wharf area of San Francisco.
