Description
Donner Lake Afternoon is a photograph painted with digital filters, captured on a bright October day.
Donner Lake is a freshwater lake in Northeast California on the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada and about 11 miles northwest of the much larger Lake Tahoe. A moraine serves as a natural dam for the lake.
Both the lake and the pass were named after the ill-fated Donner Party, which wintered unintentionally near the lake in 1846.
The Donner Party spent the winter of 1846–47 snowbound in the Sierra Nevada. Some of the pioneers resorted to cannibalism to survive. Of the 87 members of the party, 48 survived to reach California, many of them having eaten the dead for survival.
